I’m a huge fan of dumping cable and going with the Internet on your tv but not just because it saves you money. Rather because I’m sick of the old system of being forced to pay for a bunch of channels you don’t need or even want. Stuck supporting their garbage ass content. I don’t want my money directly supporting bullshit like foxnews.
The reason 2 and a half men is “Americas number one comedy” is because people are so fucking dumb they watch whatever these primary network shows force down their throats. Cable shows are still seen as weird cable shows by the ave. Big network bullshit is family friendly time. This whole idea is dumb as shit but people do it because it’s easy to be lazy
When you dump cable it forces you to be more proactive. You seek out the content. This can be a hassle as the current way to get content primarily require you to know what you want to watch but what is dope is that you only support what you want. You don’t have to settle for watching some bullshit show because “nothing else was on” every fucking show is available. Given not all of it legally but we’ll get there.
The future of television is paying for what you enjoy, not paying to be spoon-fed bullshit just to support some garbage ass network that you have to pay for because some fucking exec had a good pitch. It’s about creating a television experience that is based on whatever the fuck you like, not what “America loves” or what some dumbass decided to be the new hit show. I mean people watch fucking Outsourced because NBC jammed it down their throats. Now those same assholes are blocking google tv. These old fucks are scared. An exec at dish network even said hulu is killing pay for tv. And it fucking better. For how long have people wanted to only pay for channels they want? But no these dickhead providers forced you into package deals that only got more expensive.
This shit is changing and it’s only going to change faster as more people say fuck cable. Just look at the popularity of netflix streaming. Companies need to get their content online or die. That’s the motherfucking reality.
I’m done being forced to support their idea of entertainment. The tv I watch is controlled and progammed by my taste, as it fucking should be. It allows me to create a viewing experience that is influenced by what I want rather than what they want to force upon me. It’s goddamn liberating. Yes it’s only tv but it’s in my fucking house and I don’t want these old archaic bastards in my fucking house jamming their nonsense in my face. I want to support what I want so that more of what I enjoy comes to fruition. Maybe less awesome shows would be cancelled. Primetime is whenever the fuck I say it is. Not a predetermined time slot that some asshole in a boardroom picked based on middle americas retarded viewing habits
This got longer than intended but yeah this is a movement/trend that I fully fucking support and really want more people to start fucking with because the more you dump cable the better the options will be and the sooner things will happen, more streams, more live sports, maybe even direct subscriptions to networks you enjoy. We’ll see but it’s getting better everyday and these companies need to reevaluate their models before they end up like the music industry.
i totally agree that i need to be able to control the kind of content i watch, and that influences why i don’t even own a television anymore and just use the internet to get what i want. but the idea that people are too dumb to realize that “2 and a half men” is terrible is one i have to disagree with. people could have watched arrested development, firefly or any “quality show” that has been on the air recently. the issue is something TNC got at a few days ago: people are not always looking for content that challenges them. they mostly just need something to help them get through their day, and searching for the content they want is more energy than can spare given what else is happening in their lives. as a sidenote, it didn’t help firefly that the show was not very good or clever to begin with.
I should have been clearer but, I am not arguing that people are too dumb to know that 2 & Half men sucks, it’s that they are dumb because they are too lazy to find something. When it’s 8 o’clock on a tuesday they go to the major networks because they know it’s “primetime” television. A lot of people don’t want to waste their time digging around cable channels trying to find some shit. It’s why I work with people who have never heard of Mad Men or Always Sunny. They don’t even consider looking at those channels when they are looking for content. They do what is easy and the big networks know this. That’s why you got so much bullshit white bread content on major networks.
The networks don’t have to chase down the viewer because they can slap whatever they want up and chances are people will watch it as long as it’s an easy show to get into. It’s why these shows exist. This is also a reason why most of the ways to find content on the internet sucks because for people who just want to flip through and find something it’s not that easy. You have to actively search and know what you want. I use hulu desktop all the time but unless I know what I want to watch I have to sift through a bunch of irrelevant anime bullshit just to find something.
It still beats using terrible cable interfaces but for the average person who just wants to turn on their tv, flip through and easily find something to view they will probably stick with cable until the internet comes up with a better way to find content. Steps needs to be reduced to make finding things faster and easier.
