2 de Octubre ¡No Se Olvida! • October 2nd Is Not Forgotten!
This October 2nd marks the 45 year anniversary of the Tlatelolco Student Massacre. Orchestrated by PRI president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, thousands — possibly tens of thousands — of students were shot and killed by army snipers and undercover police officers (many of whom wore a white glove on their left hand).
Díaz Ordaz, who was seeking to quell protests days before the 1968 Mexico City Olympics were inaugurated, was never held accountable for his crimes. He, in fact, claimed to be proud of the fact that he was president during the massacre. “I’m proud of 1968, because it allowed me to save the country,” Díaz Ordaz infamously said years out of office.
The chant of “dos de octubre, ¡no se olvida!”, or “October 2nd, is not forgotten!”, reminds us all to stay vigilant and remember the students massacred by their government. They were killed for wanting a better country. Never again!
