Mr. Fingers – What about this love? Promo 12” 1992

Side A

  • Kenlou Mix
  • Gonve Mix

Side B

  • Luv Dub
  • Masters At Work Dub
  • Instrumental

From just looking at the cover I’m already reconsidering this little experiment in exploring my wife’s record collection. This dude is wearing some kind of Miss Muffet looking kufi on his head and for some reason the beaded curtain he’s trying to call a necklace is swaying in the wind. He’s rocking some kind of black and white shirt thing that kind of looks like the house music version of those two tone shirts middle age white dudes wear when they go to Vegas to relive some pitiful ass version of their idea of Swingers. This just looks like it’s going to be some soulful house type shit right out the gate.

i mean, i get the gesture, but Serg knows better than I do that “rap fan sneering at house music” isn’t exactly breaking down gender barriers either. or rather, what i mean is, it does work both ways. this is a performance of the sort of snide dismissiveness that dudes regularly get away with when they aim it at women, whereas alltherecords is written in a faux-ethnographic super-naïve tone aimed at assuaging dudes.

i mean, i don’t know why I’m bothering to say so because I know Serg is too committed to kayfabe to own up to that (for which I admittedly have been pretty forgiving in his case over the years) (not like he cares).

on the bright side he’ll be showing off his wife’s collection so that’s cool.

I know there I things I can be dismissive about because I am a man but I also feel that this is a way to say fuck all this rock centric bullshit that has been happening for years and give a perspective as a rap fan on music. Yeah I’m shitting on house and I’ve done that but at the same time I didn’t pick that record, you should have seen the dread when she pulled it. This is probably the most honest shit I’ve ever tried to do on the Internet. I have no idea what is coming next, she mentioned something about the next joint being more pop. Basically this is an exercise in my wife fucking with me. This is feminim domination, I have no say in what is coming, she just throws it at my face and I have to deal with it. When I sit down with whatever record I get I’m just gonna say what I feel which is also what makes this really easy to write. This is not going to just be serg shits on stef’s collection

the other thing is that in a male dominated scene like record collecting I wanted to show that there are females who run heavy with it. My wife’s collection surpasses anything I’ve put together, we merged our shit years ago but her collection is the majority. I plan on avoiding all of the rap because that would be easy, although when I realized I was going to have to listen to jungle and two step records I regretted that decision.
